City of Heroes: Homecoming

City of Heroes: Homecoming is the sequel to the legendary 2004 MMORPG City of Heroes, officially licensed by NCSoft. This version of the game, which is being officially maintained by the Homecoming Servers team, will allow you to continue playing online within a superhero community that has tens of thousands of active players.

Game Account and Forum Account

To be able to play City of Heroes: Homecoming, you must register in the official forum first. This process is very fast: you just have to enter your date of birth, username, an email address and a password. Once you have verified your email address, you'll be able to create the Game Account. This step is very important. You have to create the Forum Account first and then the Game Account, as they are two different accounts. For this second account you just need to enter your profile name and a new password.

Choose the server that best suits your needs

Before you start playing City of Heroes: Homecoming, you'll have to choose a good server, or at least one that is in your preferred language or, if possible, one that already has some friends playing on it. Most servers are in English, so if you're comfortable with that then you'll have no problem communicating with other players. However, there are also some servers in other languages with large communities of players, and there are even some VIP servers. The best thing to do is to chat with your friends or fellow players first to decide which server you want to start playing on.

Total freedom when creating your character

As the character creation process in City of Heroes: Homecoming is very thorough, you can create a completely unique superhero. First, you'll have to choose your Alignment, which consists of deciding whether you want to be a hero or a villain. You'll then have to choose your Origin, which is the source of your character's powers. Third, you choose an Archetype, which is the closest thing to a regular character class (warrior, mage, rogue, etc.). The next step is to choose your Power Set, which is the powers you'll start off with. And, lastly, you just have to customize your superhero or supervillain, choosing from hundreds of different options.

Many improvements to the original City of Heroes

After you create your character, you can start playing. Whether this is the first time you're playing City of Heroes: Homecoming or if you have played a few hours of the original title in the past, it is highly recommended you don't skip the tutorial, as there are many changes and new concepts to learn. That said, the game still has all the traditional MMO components, so anyone who has ever played WOW, Linage or Guild Wars will have no problem familiarizing themselves with the game and its mechanics. But don't worry: if you skip the tutorial, you can come back to it at any point.

No in-game purchases or subscriptions

The main difference between the original City of Heroes and City of Heroes: Homecoming is that all in-game purchases have been removed. Similarly, no subscription fee is required to play. Everything is 100% free. You don't even need to enter a payment method to create your account and start playing. In Homecoming, there are no premium subscriptions, no premium players and no special rewards system. There is no catch; it is a completely free game.
